What Not to Ask on a Job Interview
June 2012 Job Alert Tips
We've all been in the position of interviewing for a job that we really want. Being placed in such a high-stress situation may make you ask questions that are inappropriate for the first interview. No matter how nervous or eager you are, these are questions you should avoid:
- What does your company do?
You should know this answer before the interview. Do your homework and visit their Website and Google the company name for additional information. In addition, you might want to read blogs to find out what they're saying about the company.
- What is the salary for this position?
If you've done your research, you already have a general idea of how much this position pays. Should you be selected as their top candidate, they will make you an offer. This is the time to accept their offer or to counter it.
- How long can I expect to wait for a promotion or pay increase?
This question implies that you are not satisfied with the position presented and there's already a mismatch. Instead ask about the typical growth opportunities and career development for a person in this role.
- Does the job require overtime or weekend work?
Sometimes a job may require going the extra mile and putting in extra hours. Asking this question makes it seem like you're not willing to do that. Rather, you can ask what the typical workday is like for the position.
- Can I work from home?
Maybe, but you have to wait until you have properly established yourself with a company before making this request.
