Temp Hiring at All Levels...A Sign of Our Times

By Ron Torch, CEO & Chief Marketing Officer - Torch Group Inc.

If you find that your open positions are on hold due to the uncertainty of the financial markets, you're not alone. The current volatility on Wall Street and global markets have redefined hiring in the workplace. Employers have reason for pause when it comes to adding full-time workers and are now using interim and temp-to-perm staffing options for their managerial and professional positions.

At one time, hiring interim and temp-to-perm staff after a recession was a sign of economic recovery. Not these days. Today, it's a sign that companies have doubts about the recovery's durability and magnitude. Employers know that the economy could change at any time and consequently, by hiring temporary professionals at all levels, they have staff for whatever their needs might be without making long-term commitments.

For now, temporary staffing has the leading edge in this uncertain economy where companies are urged to run "lean" and think of ways in which they can better compete. With this in mind, temporary hiring should be a part of your staffing plans since there are several bottom line benefits to this strategic staffing option:

  • Reduce Costs
Temporary staff can be hired as needed or relieved as the needs of your company fluctuate. Therefore, money is saved by not hiring full-time.
  • Improve Performance
Having an extra pair of hands around the office has a positive effect on your current employees. Relieving the workload improves morale, cuts down on absenteeism and improves productivity.
  • Reduce Risk
Thorough background screening by staffing firms ensures that the interim or temp-to-perm worker assigned to your company has the skill sets necessary to get the job done. Also, temp-to-hire options allow your business to try before you buy. It's a great way to evaluate the individual before considering a full-time offer.
  • Increase Flexibility
Hiring as needed allows your company to respond to market demands quickly. For example, if there's a hiring freeze, interim workers can handle the workload without increasing your headcount. In addition, there may be times when short-term projects arise and with temporary hires, you won't be left shorthanded.
Temporary hiring is a sign of our times. It is becoming a regular practice for many present-day companies as they deal with the sudden twists and turns that come with our highly unpredictable economy.
